8x Magnifying Mirror

A magnifying mirror is an essential beauty tool. It has just the right size to be very mobile and its focus is (usually) exact to your face. Add a little magnification, and you have an instant up-close and a very clear view of your face.

Women (and men) use magnifying mirrors for a lot of personal beauty regimens. They use it for plucking hairs (on the eyebrows and on the chin for men), for shaving, for applying moisturizer and/or astringent and other facial products, and for applying makeup. For example, you can easily spot a makeup mishap with a magnified view of your skin. The possible uses for magnifying mirrors are endless.

A magnifying mirror can be a stand-mount or a wall-mount. A stand-mount usually has a heavy base—metal or plastic—and the mirror is attached to swivel mounts. This configuration makes it very easy to mirror your face on any position, height, and angle. Being very mobile, a stand-mount mirror is prone to damage. You can easily unintentionally hit the mirror that it falls, or even drop the whole mirror entirely. You would not want shattered glass in your bathroom, would you?

A wall-mount mirror entails a little more work (installation) but it stays there no matter what. It can also bee treated as a piece of furniture—you can select a mirror whose design matches the general theme of your room or bathroom. Most wall-mount mirrors are free to move in a lot of ways. They can be retracted, swivel, and even move up or down. Selecting the right magnifying mirror really boils down to personal preference.

A typical magnifying mirror has two sides—the magnified mirror side and the standard mirror side.

Why 8x?

The levels of magnification for magnifying mirrors vary from just right, to strong, and to really strong. Magnification of 8 times falls under strong. People who choose this setup might have some problems with their eyes (e.g. use spectacles), or really need a close-up view of their skin. Either way, a person with normal eyesight would not have problems using an 8x magnifying mirror.

Tips on buying an 8x magnifying mirror

Choosing the perfect mirror for your room can be a very enjoyable task. It is important to invest just the right amount of money, to get a good deal, and most importantly, to select a quality product. Buying a magnifying mirror, especially a wall-mount mirror, is one of those things you hopefully do just once—so do it right the first time.

Because assuming that you indeed want a mirror that magnifies 8 times, and at this point have decided between a wall-mount and a stand-mount, you can look at two more things which can help you select a good mirror—the quality of the mirror and glass, and the quality of the other materials.

The surface of the glass should be perfectly smooth. Imperfections on the glass mean imperfections on the mirrored image. The reflecting surface should be crystal clear. What it is made up of is hard to pinpoint without unnecessary knowledge of proper mirror-building, but for the common man a simple comparison with other available mirrors should do the trick. For the sake of noting, some mirrors’ reflective surface are made of aluminum, others silver.

The qualities of the other materials—the base, the swivel mounts, etc. are also very important. Like we said earlier, a magnifying mirror can be a piece of furniture. We advise you buy nothing less than a mirror made with a metal base and frame. The finish of the metal will boil down to personal choice. Options include gold, bronze, silver, chrome, and/or brushed. The quality of the finish is important because cheaply-made mirrors tarnish and/or rust.

The diameter of the mirror should also be considered. It is important that the mirror covers your entire face when you look at it. Most stores specify the diameter of the mirror in inches. A good base diameter is around 7 inches.

As an example, a good quality mirror should not cost less that $15.00.
